Blake Garrett’s cause of death is revealed after five months

Former child actor Blake Garrett’s cause of death has been revealed as an accidental overdose.

The star, who was best known for appearing in the 2006 film How To Eat Fried Worms, died from acute fentanyl toxicity, according to TMZ.

The outlet stated that according to a summary report from the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Garrett died at a sober living facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Garrett died on February 8 at age 33.

At the time, his mom, Carol Garrett, feared that he may have unintentionally overdosed in an attempt to self-medicate after he contracted the shingles. He had previously achieved three years of sobriety.

Garrett was born Nolan Blake Garrett in Austin, Texas, and starred in the 2006 adaptation of the classic children’s book How To Eat Fried Worms.

His mother said that in his final days he was plagued by painful medical issues.

According to TMZ, Carol said her son visited an Oklahoma emergency room when he was experiencing excruciating pain.

The condition was allegedly diagnosed as shingles, an extremely painful rash that can occur when the varicella-zoster virus – which causes chickenpox – is reactivated years later in people who contracted it when they were younger, per the CDC. 

Although the condition is more likely to affect older people, around one in three people will develop shingles in their lifetime.

Carol said she feared the pain from the shingles might have led her son to seek substances for relief.

Garrett got an early start in show business, acting in local theater productions of Aladdin and His Magical Lamp and Peanuts: A Charlie Brown Tribute as a kid.

At 10 years old, he was part of a traveling theater production of Barney’s Colorful World, which played in arenas throughout the country.

The show also gave Garrett his big break on screen, as he was featured in a video made from the show that was released in 2004.

How To Eat Fried Worms was released in theaters two years later.

The children’s movie received mixed reviews, but Garrett and the rest of the primary cast were honored with the award for Best Young Ensemble Cast at the 28th Young Artist Awards in 2007.

Despite early success, Garrett doesn’t appear to have continued his career in acting, and he does not have any additional credits to his name.
